Killawarra Solar & BESS

The Project

The integrated Killawarra Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project represents an important step in Western Australia’s renewable energy future. The Project has been designed with a generation capacity of 400 megawatts (MW) and an energy storage capacity exceeding 1,600 megawatt-hours (MWh). Combining state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) solar arrays with advanced battery energy storage technology, the Project will deliver reliable, sustainable power to WA’s primary energy network, the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

The Mid West is projected to experience unprecedented energy growth, driven by industrial expansion and electrification initiatives. New loads of 1.8 gigawatts (GW) are anticipated within the region in the coming years.

Strategically positioned to support the region’s dynamic and accelerating energy demands, the Killawarra Project will harness solar generation during daylight hours while storing surplus energy. This stored energy will be dispatched during peak demand periods to stabilise the grid, optimise power availability, and reduce price volatility for consumers.

Location

The Killawarra Solar and BESS Project is located at 3688 Three Springs-Eneabba Road, Kadathinni, approximately 25 kilometres southwest of Three Springs in Western Australia’s Mid West region.

Trina Solar acknowledges the Yamatji Peoples as the traditional guardians, keepers and knowledge holders of the land.

The Project development area is located on an approximate 620-hectare freehold site that is predominately cleared from historical farming activities. The site has been selected due to its proximity to Western Power’s Northern Energy Link. In-depth assessment and evaluation have been undertaken to ensure the site effectively meets technical and environmental requirements.

Community

Trina Solar is committed to fostering collaborative partnerships with the Mid West community. We recognise that the success of the Killawarra Solar and BESS Project hinges on aligning our efforts with local priorities, values, and aspirations. Through ongoing dialogue and information sharing, we will work with the community, Traditional Owners, and stakeholders to explore tailored community initiatives that deliver lasting value for the region.

The Killawarra Project will advance Western Australia’s clean energy transition and unlock a range of opportunities for local economic growth and development. During construction and operation, we will proactively explore opportunities for local business participation. Beyond employment and procurement, the Project will also pioneer agri-solar integration where dual land use will support sustainable agriculture alongside renewable energy generation – a model designed to enhance regional productivity and innovation.

Get involved

We believe that community input is invaluable, and we will engage with the local community throughout the Project’s delivery to share information, gather feedback, and identify ways to support strong outcomes for Three Springs.

We value your input through the design consultation phase of the Project and encourage you to share your feedback. Please contact us to learn more about Killawarra Solar and BESS Project and opportunities to engage with us

Local businesses

Trina Solar is exploring opportunities to engage with local suppliers, contractors, and businesses to support the construction and operation of the Project. To register an expression of interest and to be kept updated on future business participation opportunities, please contact us

Design

Key elements of the Killawarra Solar and BESS Project include:

  • 400 MW solar farm comprising 517,128 panels.
  • 400 MW / 1,600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) including 576 BESS containers.
  • Purpose-built substation to connect the facility to the 330kV transmission line passing through the Project site via an approximate 60-metre transmission line.
